The Decision Driven® Strategy pattern includes 2 decisions that can be used to discern, evaluate and prioritize your organization’s core competencies. We separate core competencies into 2 classes: Process and Technology. Based on my experience, most businesses treat these capabilities as different, fund them from separate “pots of money” and assign responsibility for them to different individuals or teams.
Core competencies are always a balance between the unique capabilities that we have already demonstrated and those we need to acquire to maintain or gain competitive advantage. As such, they answer both “What important things do we do uniquely better than others?” and “What capabilities should we invest in to achieve our vision?”
Here are some criteria to consider when evaluating your process core competencies:
A similar set of criteria may be applied to technology core competencies.
Both of these decisions can be visualized as capability roadmaps.
