Core Competency Strategy is one of the 6 child decisions in our Decision Driven® Strategy pattern under the top-level vision decision. I have framed this decision as “What is our overall strategy to acquire and grow our process and technology core competencies?”
Our core competencies are the capability building blocks that enable us to differentiate our products and services. They logically fall into 2 broad groups, process capabilities and technology capabilities. There are a set of strategy decisions that concern how we will grow this overall set of capabilities through research and process improvement initiatives. There are also decisions that address how we will manage the knowledge we create, protect it as intellectual property and leverage relevant standards.
For each process or technology core competency that we identify as worthy of pursuit, we may add a “capability design” branch (see below).
Core competencies call for a long range view of your organization. It takes strategic investment to significantly improve our capabilities and escape a short-term focus on day-to-day operations. Decisions create your future; in this area they create your ability in the future to “Seize the Day”.
